Claude Cowork: What It Does and Which Subscription You Need
Adekiya Joscor · 27 October 2026
Claude Cowork is Anthropic's agent mode for everyday knowledge work. Instead of answering one message at a time, Claude takes on multi-step tasks, such as researching a topic, organising files, building a spreadsheet or drafting a report, and works through them while you do something else. Cowork requires a paid Claude plan: Pro (from $20 a month), Max, Team or Enterprise. It is not available on the free plan.
Details below come from Anthropic's Cowork help documentation and published plan pricing, reviewed in October 2026. Features change quickly, so check Claude's settings for what your plan includes today.
What Claude Cowork does
Cowork brings the agent abilities of Claude Code to non-technical work, with no terminal needed. You describe the outcome, and Claude plans the steps, uses tools and returns finished files. Typical uses include:
- Researching a topic across many web pages and writing a sourced summary.
- Turning a folder of receipts or CSV exports into a clean spreadsheet with formulas.
- Drafting slide decks and formatted documents from notes.
- Working through repetitive admin, such as renaming and sorting files.
- Running scheduled tasks, such as a weekly report, on a timetable.
Key features
Cloud sessions
Tasks run on Anthropic's servers, so they keep going if you close your laptop, and you can check progress from another device.
Access to your files
With the Claude desktop app, you can connect specific folders. Claude can read and write only in folders you connect.
Connectors, browser and plugins
Connectors link Claude to apps such as email, calendars and document tools. Browser actions let Claude open pages and fill forms. Plugins bundle skills and connectors for particular kinds of work.
Projects and scheduled tasks
Projects group related tasks with shared files and instructions. Scheduled tasks run on demand or on a timetable.
Permission modes
You choose how much Claude can do without asking: approve every action, let Claude check each action automatically, or skip checks. For sensitive work, involving money, messages sent on your behalf or important files, keep approvals on.
Which subscription do you need for Cowork?
- Free — no Cowork access. Good for chat only. See Claude Free vs Pro.
- Pro — $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly. Includes Cowork on desktop, web and mobile. The right starting point for most individuals.
- Max — $100 a month (5x Pro usage) or $200 a month (20x Pro usage). For people who run long or frequent Cowork tasks and keep hitting Pro limits.
- Team — per-seat pricing for organisations of 5 or more, with admin controls. Cowork on web and mobile has been in beta for Team.
- Enterprise — custom contracts; owners decide whether Cowork is enabled.
For a full breakdown of tiers and usage allowances, read our Claude subscription plans guide.
Usage limits: why Cowork uses more
Cowork tasks involve many steps, tool calls and files, so they use more of your plan's allowance than a quick chat. Pro limits reset in rolling sessions, with a weekly cap across models. To stretch your allowance:
- Group related work into one task instead of many small ones.
- Start a new task for unrelated work rather than continuing a very long one.
- Check usage in Settings and save heavy jobs for when you have headroom.
If you regularly run out on Pro, Max is the upgrade path. If you only occasionally use Cowork, Pro is enough.
Devices and requirements
- Desktop app — macOS and Windows (Linux in beta). Needed for local folder access, browser use and computer use.
- Web and mobile — available on Pro, Max and Team for cloud tasks.
- Chrome — Claude in Chrome adds a side panel for browser tasks on paid plans.
- Internet — a stable connection is needed throughout a session.
Safety: what to keep in mind
Cowork can act on websites and files, which brings risks that ordinary chat does not. Anthropic warns about prompt injection, where text on a web page tries to trick an AI agent into doing something you did not ask for. Review plans before Claude acts on sensitive files, payments or messages, connect only the folders a task needs, and keep approvals on for anything irreversible. Claude asks for explicit approval before permanently deleting files.
Cowork vs Claude Code
Claude Code is aimed at developers and runs in a terminal or IDE. Cowork uses the same agent ideas for documents, spreadsheets, research and admin in a friendly interface. Both are included in paid plans. If you are deciding between a subscription and paying per use through the API for coding, see Claude Code: API vs subscription.
How to pay for Claude in Nigeria
Anthropic bills in US dollars by card. Nigerian users typically use a naira card enabled for international payments or a virtual dollar card. You can also pay in naira through listings on the DiscountZAR AI & Writing marketplace; check whether a listing is a private account, a shared seat or an upgrade on your own account before buying. Gifting is another option; see how to gift a Claude subscription.
Common questions
Is Claude Cowork free?
No. It requires Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise.
Do I need the desktop app?
Only to give Claude access to local folders, your browser or your computer. Cloud tasks also run on web and mobile on supported plans.

Summary
Claude Cowork turns Claude into an assistant that completes multi-step work and returns finished files. You need at least Claude Pro; heavy users may need Max. Install the desktop app if you want Claude to work with your own folders, and keep permission checks on for sensitive tasks.
