How to Cancel Spotify Premium: Stop Renewal and Keep Your Playlists
Adekiya Joscor · 24 October 2026
To cancel Spotify Premium, sign in to the correct account on Spotify’s website, open Manage your plan, and select the cancellation option. Complete the confirmation and check the date your account will move to Free. If a partner bills your subscription, use that partner’s cancellation process.
For an ordinary paid period, Premium generally remains available until the next billing date. A zero-priced free trial is different: Spotify’s current guidance says cancellation ends those Premium benefits immediately. Read your account’s notice before confirming rather than assuming every subscription behaves the same way.
How to cancel Spotify Premium step by step
Spotify’s official cancellation guide is the best starting point. The wording of account controls can change, so look for the plan-management and cancellation function rather than relying on a screenshot from an older app.
- Sign in to the account that holds Premium.
- Open Manage your plan.
- Select Cancel subscription, or follow the available plan-change route to the cancellation option.
- Complete every confirmation step.
- Record the final account status and effective date.
Use a browser if you cannot locate the controls in the mobile app. Keep the account email visible to yourself while checking the details; cancelling an unused Free account will not stop a separate paid account.
Do not treat uninstalling Spotify, logging out or removing a playlist as a billing action. Those changes do not establish that a subscription has ended.
Check whether you are cancelling a paid period or a free trial
This distinction affects when you lose benefits. Paid time and a zero-priced trial should not be treated as identical.
Before cancelling, read the account’s current offer and final confirmation. If you are using a zero-priced trial and want to listen until the planned end, pay particular attention to the immediate-loss notice and the renewal deadline.
Avoid last-minute decisions if you already know you do not want to renew. Leaving enough time to resolve login or partner-billing problems is usually more valuable than trying to cancel in the final minutes.
What happens to playlists and downloaded music?
Moving to Free is different from deleting your account. Spotify says your playlists and saved music remain associated with the account, and you can continue listening under the Free service’s conditions.
Music downloads are a paid feature, so do not expect stored tracks to remain an independent offline library after Premium ends. The playlist can still exist even when its offline playback benefit is gone.
If your purpose is simply to stop paying, choose subscription cancellation rather than account deletion. Closing an account is a different decision with different effects. Keep the login details for the account you intend to continue using.
Family and Duo: identify whether you manage the bill
A household plan has a manager and members. Before making changes, establish which role you hold.
If you are the manager, consider the effect on everyone relying on the plan and tell them the relevant end date. If you are a member, leaving your place is not the same as cancelling the manager’s recurring bill. Use the account’s displayed role and plan information to avoid acting on the wrong assumption.
For Family, Spotify’s plan-management guidance explains that the manager pays and controls membership. It also notes that removing people does not automatically downgrade the plan.
This matters when a household shrinks. Removing a member may solve an access issue while leaving the same monthly payment in place. Review the plan itself if the goal is to lower spending.
No cancellation button? Follow the billing trail
A missing cancellation control may indicate partner billing. Inspect the Payment section of your account and the original receipt to identify the company that manages the subscription.
There is a practical difference between Spotify billing you directly and another company including Premium in a bundle. The listening account may be the same while the renewal control lives elsewhere.
Use the responsible company’s official account portal or support route. Ask for confirmation of the service being cancelled, whether the change affects the whole bundle, and the last date of paid access.
Our existing Spotify payment methods guide provides broader context. For cancellation, keep the task focused on identifying and stopping the particular recurring arrangement you authorised.
Charged after cancelling: read the account status first
Spotify’s cancelled-but-still-charged guidance distinguishes several account states.
- A future payment date — What to investigate: Whether cancellation reached the final confirmation
- A date for switching to Free — What to investigate: Whether the charge was processed before cancellation
- Free, but a recent charge on your statement — What to investigate: Whether another account holds Premium
- A billing partner — What to investigate: The partner’s payment and cancellation records
Compare the account email, receipt, confirmation date and transaction details. Do not repeatedly create or cancel accounts while trying to trace one charge.
A useful support note identifies the account and dates without exposing sensitive information publicly. Include the payment reference through the provider’s private support process if requested, but omit your full card number, password and one-time codes.
How to recognise an account mismatch
People sometimes create accounts through different email addresses or sign-in options and later forget which one was upgraded. A paid account can continue renewing while the app on your current phone is signed in to Free.
Search your own email receipts and compare the login used for payment with the one used in the app. If the account page shows Free, that is evidence about that account, not every account you may have created.
When you cannot identify the charged account, contact Spotify through its official support route. Keep a concise record of the charge amount, date and merchant description so the enquiry is specific.
Cancellation and refunds are separate requests
Cancellation prevents future renewal once completed under the applicable terms. It does not, by itself, prove that a past payment will be returned.
If you believe the charge was wrong, consult Spotify’s refund policy and explain the circumstances to the company responsible for billing. Avoid assuming a refund result before the provider reviews the request.
For an unrecognised transaction, also follow your bank or payment provider’s official process promptly. That is a different problem from voluntarily ending a subscription you recognise.
Would changing plans solve the problem better?
If you want to stop using Premium, cancellation is appropriate. If the problem is cost or an unsuitable household arrangement, examine available plans you qualify for before making a decision.
Do not switch purely on a low advertised price. Student requires eligibility, and Duo or Family have household conditions. Any change should match your actual circumstances and the amount you want to spend after promotions end.
For a later return, use the account you want to keep and review the current offer. Do not assume a previous trial can be repeated or that the old price will still apply. Our guide to paying for Spotify in Nigeria covers the payment side.
Keep a short cancellation record
After completing the process, keep the account identifier, confirmation date and effective end date together. Reconcile the next statement against that record.
This takes little effort and makes a future enquiry much easier. Instead of relying on memory, you can state exactly which subscription was cancelled and what the account showed afterwards.
Stop renewal with a clear final status
The decisive step is a completed cancellation on the correct paid account or with its billing partner. Check the effective date, understand any trial exception, and keep the confirmation.
Your playlists can remain part of your listening routine on Free. Ending a recurring payment does not require abandoning the account you have spent time building.
