How to Download Songs on Spotify and Listen Offline
Adekiya Joscor · 24 October 2026
To download songs on Spotify, use the official app with an active Premium plan, open an album or playlist, and select its download control. Wait for the completed-download indicator, then test playback without an internet connection. For one song, add it to a playlist and download that playlist.
Spotify downloads stay within Spotify. They are offline listening access, not MP3 files you can export to another music player. That distinction explains many common problems: saving a song to your library is not the same as downloading it, and seeing a playlist on a second device does not mean its audio has been downloaded there.
What you need before downloading Spotify songs
Spotify’s offline-listening help describes the current rules and controls. Music downloads require Premium; Free users can download podcasts. Spotify specifies a limit of 10,000 tracks per device on up to five devices and requires you to connect online at least once every 30 days to maintain downloads.
Before starting, confirm the account’s plan, available device storage and the connection you want to use. A long download queue is easier to manage on reliable Wi-Fi than on a fluctuating mobile connection.
Do not assume a download has completed because the playlist opens. The app can display track names and artwork before the audio is ready for offline playback.
How to download songs on Spotify on a phone or tablet
Open the official Spotify app and sign in to the account with Premium. Find the album or playlist you want, use the download arrow, and allow the transfer to finish. Look for the completed indicator beside the content.
For an individual track, create a small playlist or add the track to an appropriate existing one, then download the playlist. This is more dependable than searching for a separate file-download command on each song.
Start with a short playlist as a test. If it works, you know that the account, storage and download controls are functioning before you queue a large library. If it fails, the smaller test also makes the problem easier to reproduce.
Verify downloads before you need them
After completion, briefly disconnect from the network and play a track you have not just been streaming. That helps distinguish a genuine download from something temporarily buffered during online playback.
Restore connectivity when you finish testing. If you plan to travel, do the check while you still have enough time and data access to resolve missing items. A visible playlist is not sufficient preparation for a long journey.
Download music on a computer
Use the supported Spotify desktop app rather than expecting the web player to save your music for offline use. Open a playlist and select its download control. Check completion on that computer.
If you mainly organise music in a browser, remember that organising a playlist and downloading its audio are separate tasks. You can prepare the selection first, then open the app on the device that will actually play it.
A useful workflow is to keep one travel playlist. Add what you want while online, download it on your intended device, and check the result. This avoids assuming that your entire library must be available everywhere.
Saving, downloading and exporting are different actions
- Add to a playlist — What it achieves: Organises the track in a collection; What it does not establish: That the audio is available offline
- Save to your library — What it achieves: Makes content easier to find; What it does not establish: That every device stores a local copy
- Download in Spotify — What it achieves: Enables eligible offline playback in the app; What it does not establish: Ownership of an exportable audio file
- Follow a playlist — What it achieves: Keeps a collection accessible; What it does not establish: That future changes have finished downloading
If you can see the music but cannot play it without data, start by checking download status rather than rebuilding the playlist. The organisation may be intact while the audio transfer is incomplete.
Do not give your login to a website claiming it can convert your entire Spotify library into unrestricted files. For ordinary offline listening, the official app already provides the relevant feature.
Manage download quality, storage and data deliberately
Higher audio quality generally uses more storage and transfer data. The useful setting depends on your headphones, available space and connection, rather than the idea that the highest option is always necessary.
For a limited phone, try a small sample at your preferred quality and observe how much space it uses. Then estimate how large your intended collection might become. Leave room for operating-system updates, photographs and other essentials instead of filling the device to its limit.
Spotify’s offline-download feature guide recommends at least 1 GB of free space and notes that offline downloads are included across Premium plan types. Its country-specific promotions are separate from that feature information; check Nigerian pricing locally.
Keep mobile-data use intentional
Review the app’s download and data settings before transferring a large collection. If you choose to allow mobile downloads, understand which data bundle will be used and whether other applications are competing for it.
There is no single accurate “data per playlist” figure. Track length, quality and the size of the collection all matter. Measure a small representative download on your own device instead of relying on a generic number.
Why Spotify songs may not download
Diagnose one variable at a time. Confirm that Premium is active on the account in the app, try a small playlist on a stable connection, and check storage. If one device works and another fails, investigate the failing device before changing the subscription.
- No music download option — Useful first investigation: Check plan status and that you are using the supported app
- Download remains incomplete — Useful first investigation: Test connection and available storage
- A second device has no offline music — Useful first investigation: Check whether downloads were completed on that device
- Playlist is visible but tracks are unavailable offline — Useful first investigation: Inspect track-level completion
- Downloads vanished after reinstalling — Useful first investigation: Re-download the content in the app
- Several older devices have downloads — Useful first investigation: Review the device allowance
Spotify’s support guidance also flags battery-saving or cache-clearing apps as possible obstacles. Consider whether a device utility is stopping background activity or removing app data before repeatedly starting the same transfer.
Reinstallation should come after simpler checks. It can remove local downloads, leaving you with a much larger recovery task than the original error.
Keep your offline library manageable
Download music for a purpose: commuting, a trip, exercise or a period with poor connectivity. A smaller, relevant collection is easier to verify than thousands of tracks you rarely play.
Periodically remove local downloads you no longer need while keeping useful playlists organised. Read any confirmation carefully so you understand whether you are removing stored audio or changing the playlist itself.
If Premium ends, do not expect music downloads to remain usable simply because files were stored earlier. Plan continued listening around the subscription you actually hold. For payment questions, use our Spotify subscription payment guide.
Frequently asked questions
Can I download one song?
Add it to a playlist and download that playlist. A short collection is a practical way to manage a few specific tracks without downloading a large album.
Will downloads appear automatically on my new phone?
Your account can make playlists accessible, but confirm local audio downloads on the new phone. Do not erase the old device before testing the music you need on its replacement.
Can I use downloaded songs outside Spotify?
Spotify’s download feature is for playback inside its service. It is not an export tool for a USB drive, independent music player or video-editing project.
Why does offline playback still need occasional internet access?
Downloads are part of an ongoing streaming service. Spotify requires periodic online access rather than treating a download as a permanent purchase. Reconnect before extended travel and check the library again.
Make the offline test part of your routine
Use the official app, choose an appropriate playlist, wait for completed downloads and test playback without connectivity. Then maintain a focused library with enough free storage and periodic online access.
That final test turns a download icon into something useful: confidence that the music you chose will play when your connection does not.
