YouTube Premium Family: Cost, Household Rules and Joining Requirements
Adekiya Joscor · 27 October 2026
YouTube Premium Family lets one family manager share Premium with up to five other people, six accounts in total, as long as everyone lives in the same household. In Nigeria it has cost ₦2,800 a month since April 2025, with some accounts reporting ₦3,600 a month since May 2026. Each member keeps their own account, history and recommendations.
The rules below come from YouTube's official family-plan help pages, reviewed in October 2026. They matter more than the price: a family plan is designed for one household, and YouTube checks.
How much does YouTube Premium Family cost in Nigeria?
The family plan was raised from ₦1,700 to ₦2,800 a month in April 2025. Since May 2026, some subscribers have reported a new price of ₦3,600, applied in phases from each account's next billing date. Your own Purchases and memberships page shows the price for your account. For comparison with the individual and student plans, see our YouTube Premium price guide.
Split across a full household of six, the family plan costs ₦467 to ₦600 per person a month, far less than six individual memberships.
What every member gets
- Ad-free videos across YouTube on phones, computers and TVs.
- Background play and downloads for offline viewing.
- YouTube Music Premium, with ad-free music and song downloads.
- Their own account, watch history, playlists and recommendations. Members do not see each other's viewing.
The household rule
YouTube's terms state that family members sharing a YouTube family plan must live in the same household as the family manager, meaning the same residential address. YouTube can ask members to confirm their location, and has described periodic checks, including a check-in about every 30 days. Members who repeatedly fail the check can lose Premium benefits on that plan.
This means a family plan is not a legitimate way to share Premium with friends, colleagues or relatives in other houses or cities. If someone does not live with you, they need their own membership.
Other joining requirements
The family manager
- Must be 18 or older and have a Google account.
- Is the only person who can buy the plan, invite or remove members, and change billing.
- If already in a Google family group, the plan must be bought by that group's manager.
Members
- Need a Google account. Children under 13 can join with a Google account supervised by a parent through Family Link, where available.
- Must be in the same country as the manager. A member whose Google Payments country does not match cannot join.
- Can only belong to one Google family group at a time.
The 12-month switching limit
Google allows you to switch family groups only once every 12 months. If you leave a family group and join another, you cannot join a third for a year. Think before accepting an invitation, especially from a seller.
How to set up YouTube Premium Family
- On the YouTube app, tap your profile picture, then Purchases and memberships (or go to youtube.com/premium in a browser).
- Choose the Family plan and complete payment as the manager.
- Open Family sharing settings, then Edit, then Invite a new member.
- Enter the person's email address or phone number and send.
- The member accepts the invitation from email or the YouTube app and signs in with their own account.
The manager gets an email each time someone joins. Members appear under Family sharing settings.
How to remove someone or leave
The manager can remove a member at any time from Family sharing settings, by tapping the member's name and choosing Remove member. A member can leave from their Google family settings. Remember the 12-month switching limit before leaving.
Family plan vs individual: which do you need?
Choose the family plan if two or more people at your address would use Premium. Even two people often save compared with two individual plans. Choose individual if you live alone, or if the other people in your house rarely use YouTube.
A student in university accommodation who no longer lives at the family address should not be on the family plan; a YouTube Premium Student membership is the right option.
A note on "family slots" from sellers
You may see YouTube Premium "family slots" advertised cheaply. Joining a stranger's family group does not meet YouTube's household rule and can stop working without warning, and the 12-month switching limit can lock you out of joining your real family's plan. DiscountZAR requires family and invitation-based access to follow each provider's official account-management rules and terms. Read the listing terms on the streaming marketplace carefully, and prefer an upgrade on your own account where one is offered.

Summary
YouTube Premium Family covers up to six accounts at one address for ₦2,800 to ₦3,600 a month in Nigeria. It is excellent value for real households, but it is not designed for sharing across homes. Set it up as the manager, invite people who live with you, and keep the 12-month switching limit in mind.
