Apple Music on Android: Setup, Subscriptions and Device Limitations

Apple Music works on Android through the official Apple Music app on Google Play. You sign in with an Apple Account (or create one in the app), choose a plan, and get the same catalogue, playlists, lyrics and downloads as on iPhone. A few features differ: some depend on Apple hardware, and settings sit in different places. Apple lists Android 5.0 or later as the minimum, though a recent Android version gives the best experience.

This guide covers setup, payment and the real differences on Android, as reviewed in October 2026.

How to set up Apple Music on Android

  1. Open the Google Play Store and install Apple Music (published by Apple).
  2. Open the app and sign in with your Apple Account, or tap the option to create one.
  3. If you are new, choose a plan or start an eligible free trial. If you already subscribe on another device, your subscription unlocks automatically.
  4. Choose a few favourite genres and artists to train recommendations.

If you subscribed through MTN, open the activation link from MTN's SMS and sign in with the same Apple Account. See Apple Music with MTN.

Subscribing and paying on Android

Inside the app, tap the menu (three dots), then Account to subscribe, change plan or cancel. You can pay with a card on your Apple Account, Apple Account balance or MTN airtime. Every plan, including Individual, Family and Student, is available on Android when paid to Apple. Our guide to paying for Apple Music in Nigeria compares the options, and our price guide shows current naira prices.

What works the same as iPhone

Android limitations to know before paying

Lossless and spatial audio

The Android app supports lossless audio and Dolby Atmos on compatible devices. Bluetooth headphones compress audio, so you will not hear true lossless over Bluetooth; you need wired headphones and, for hi-res, an external DAC.

Apple hardware features

Features tied to AirPods, HomePod or Apple Watch, such as automatic device switching or Siri control, are limited or unavailable on Android.

Settings location

Settings live inside the app (menu > Settings) rather than in the phone's system settings. That is where you control cellular streaming, download quality and storage.

Battery and storage optimisation

Some Android phones aggressively close background apps. If playback stops when the screen is off, exclude Apple Music from battery optimisation in your phone's settings.

Saving data on Android

Apple Music on Android vs Spotify

On Android, Spotify has a free tier and deeper Android integrations, while Apple Music includes lossless audio at no extra cost and syncs neatly if you also use Apple devices. See our Spotify vs Apple Music comparison.

Troubleshooting

"The app says I need to subscribe, but I already pay"

Sign out and back in with the Apple Account that holds the subscription. For MTN plans, reopen the MTN activation link.

"Downloads disappeared"

Downloads need an active subscription and periodic connection. Renew if your plan lapsed, and check whether downloads were stored on an SD card that was removed.

"My card will not add"

Enable online and international payments in your bank app, or use Apple gift card balance or MTN billing.

Common questions

Do I need an iPhone to use Apple Music?

No. Android works fully with an Apple Account.

Can I use Apple Music on an Android TV or Chromebook?

Apple Music is available on many Chromebooks through Google Play, and in web browsers at music.apple.com.

Is Apple Music cheaper on Android?

No. Prices are the same; only the payment route changes the amount.

Summary

Install Apple Music from Google Play, sign in with an Apple Account and subscribe in the app. Almost everything works as on iPhone; the main differences are Apple-hardware features and true lossless over Bluetooth.
